Favorite band from YOUR country

Post by Guest on Tue Aug 11, 2009 9:19 pm

Maybe this is a chance to learn about some bands from other countries, but I was curious as to what everyone's favorite band from their own country is.

For me:

From Canada:
Blackguard
I've seen them a few times touring with Paganfest and Summer Slaughter, and they're in the flavor of Ensiferum although with slightly more of a thrash feel. Pretty cool guys (and girl) to hang out with as well. My friend and I went to the bar with them one time, and one of the guys was drinking right out of a pitcher of beer that he'd ordered for himself, so that was pretty amusing. Laughing

I'm also Canadian and I really like this new, young power metal band called Borealis.

I'm looking forward to their future stuff because I really enjoyed their first CD, World of Silence.

I'm from the USA and I would have to say Metallica, mainly because of the fact that they got me into metal and have influnced so many bands. (Their new stuff isn't as good as their first 4 albums but it's alright)

@Centurychild: I love Magica! I have all of their albums! One of my fave songs is actually Daca...I have no idea what it says at all, but it's a great tune. What does "Daca" mean, and can you give me just a summary of what the song is about? Ana is an amazing vocalist!

i'm glad that you like Magica...''Daca" means ''If".It's a song about your personal wishes...like flying away from reality into wilderness and fairy world.Well actually this is only my opinion of what the song is about..maybe somebody else thinks different.

Re: Favorite band from YOUR country

I dunno, there are so many great bands from my country. Everyone knows Helloween, Blind Guardian, Running Wild or Haggard, so I won't bother with them. But I'd like to point one out that really deserves to be better known: Sieges Even. Unfortunately, they have dissolved for the second time now, but a career of 22 years (including breaks), being considered a pioneer in their genre, with every album highly respected, and a back catalogue of seven studio albums and a recent live album is nothing to sneeze at.

They've essentially functioned as the creative outlet - the hobby band - of the Holzwarth brothers, which are better known as part of the rhythm section of other bands: Alex drums for Rhapsody, helped out in Angra and Blind Guardian, and participated in Avantasia and Dol Ammad. He leads the drummer school "Drummers Focus" in Munich, as well. Oliver is known as the bassist of Blind Guardian and Power Quest. Ever since the end of Sieges Even, Alex and Oliver have officially started to work as freelance musicians - which means that if your band needs a bassist or drummer next week, give the Holzwarth brothers a call. One of Oliver's first customers happened to be a certain singer from Finland ...

My first contact with Sieges Even was through their song "What's Up God", and the beginning sounds INSANE. Like two bands playing at the same time. Not for the faint of heart. After their reunion, however, they released two albums which are more atmospheric in style. Even if the technical orientation of their previous albums puts you off (something like jazz metal), give their more recent albums (which are easier to get hold of anyway) a chance. They're of a more atmospheric nature.

Interesting tidbit: After their reunion, André Matos, who had just parted ways with Angra, was their vocalist for a short while, reciprocating the favour Alex had did the band in 1993/1994. (In fact, Angra have always kept close ties to the German metal scene, which makes me wonder why they are not better known here.)

I like a lot of bands from my country that I can't choose the best one. But at the moment I think it's Heidevolk. Very closed followed by Within Temptation, Epica and Delain.

I think the only Savatage song I really know is Hall of the Mountain King. (If I'm even thinking of the correct band.)

Yes, that is them! And I love that song too!! Cool

They were very underrated IMO. But now most of them went to their other project: Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I don't really know them well, only heard "Hall of the Mountain King" (isn't that one based on Grieg?) and "Complaint in the System (Veronica Guerin)" on Pandora (and 1 track on last.fm sometime, haha), and I think they were an important forerunner for the melodic (symphonic/operatic/musical-influenced) European style of power metal. I suppose I should pay more attention to them. There's still Jon Oliva's Pain, anyone familiar with that one? It's said to be in the same style as Savatage, and considered its successor in a way.
