re-directed from Finnish metal/music discussion*:

"Thank You" is a great song!

Have you seen this parody? It's killer!

Yeah, that was quite funny! Great parody!

I moved the topic over here so it was more with the discussion!

You'll never get bored with Maiden unlike some EU bands who try to sound Americanised nowadays, meh I can say they mixed up with the wrong crowd (Eg Slayer) and fucked up their sound. You can say of all the Big 4, Megadeth still churn out good metal.

I thought Metallica's Death Magnetic was okay though... not great, but not bad.

BTW, awesome picture with Zakk man! bounce

Ok this is a great one from Pete from The Haunted on In Flames: "Is not feeling the love when it comes to In Flames. Seriously, I just don't get it. All Anders does is whine. Jesus people?!" Epic Win Status on Facebook xD

But yes seriously In Flames nowadays suck, they got the American syndrome that a lot of good EU metal band tends to suffer.

I agree man. I used to love In Flames.. now they seem so commerical and weak now... I wish they would go back to the Jester Race days.. but that will never happen at this rate.... No

Well I think EU metal bands must stick to their roots and don't try to satisfy the American crowd, I mean look at Maiden, they still retain their roots.

I like how Bruce put this age old problem to perspective esp Metal EU playing in America, once an EU always an EU don't change your fuckin sound. Cause know your roots.

@ Ravisk

True. Bands should stick to their roots.. and not change their sound just because of trying to fit in a certain market..

I just found this one of the blogs I frequent and thought it was really worth posting here, too.

Basically, there was one heavy metal band in Iraq, called Acrassicauda, and they were the subject of a documentary 2 years ago called "Heavy Metal in Baghdad" (http://www.heavymetalinbaghdad.com/). The trailer is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC3icYwYstg.

They apparently applied for refugee status and have all been granted it recently and are now in New York.

Here is more: http://vice.typepad.com/vice_magazine/2009/02/new-york---acra.html

They sound like they're doing very well, and even have a video out now!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcRVHqIkDH0

This is a really great story, and now I totally need to go find that documentary!

Oh and speaking of Documentaries, Canuck, you should check out Promised Land Of Heavy Metal, haha I got their director, Kimmo Kuusniemi on my FB contacts.

OK, am I the only one who is intrigued by the background vocals on here? Shocked It's a snippet from the new Scorpions album. (And their final one, according to their recent announcement ... Neutral)

It sounds like a good song...But why are the background vocals particularly intriguing, Almagest?

Re: General World Metal/Music Chat

Post by Guest on Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:04 pm

That was pretty clever and funny indeed!

But if there's anything that could be called a core tenet of heavy metal, it's a healthy dose of skepticism (obMFF: There's a Finnish metal band called Skepticism, a leader in the field of funeral doom!) of organised religion and dogma, if not outright opposition or hostility against the concept, given heavy metal's longstanding freethought tradition. (I know that there's Christian metal too, but it's a secondary and notoriously controversial subject.) Also, despite displaying strongly quasi-religious tendencies many times, metalheads are (with very few exceptions) all show and wouldn't ever go as far as taking their object of worship so seriously as to organise a literal crusade. Like so many forms of pop culture that geeks fancy, heavy metal is an embodiment of the "ha, ha, only serious" attitude.

But as for splitting into countless in-fighting factions, how exactly would that make the heavy metal based religion different from its traditional opponent, Christianity? tongue

Regarding the background vocals, they sound familiar.

Exactly!

I thought the characterizations the author made of the different sub-genres were pretty funny. It gave me a good laugh!

I agree, the genre characterisations are funny.

I don't know, it could be her. It would certainly fit what she said about doing a duet with "a famous and beloved band". She's been in contact with them before (on tour with NW and on the Doro anniversary concert), so it is absolutely possible.
